What is the going rate for freelance graphic design work?

As in designs for greeting cards, posters, fine art prints etc.
What should be paid to the designer for the initial design and for a digital file that is ready to go directly to press?

I usually print from the HP 2410 photosmart but then the result is not so good. The colour doesnt really come out. Thus, do i use the wrong printer? And for the paper, which type of paper would be best to use and what is average weigh?
